Author Luis J. Rodriguez spoke to our students on March 8, 2024, to close our Read Across America week. He shared his experiences that led him to become a writer, and he shared that reading was always part of his life, even when he was homeless or imprisoned. Students in Mr. Guerrero's DEAR class read Rodriguez's book and were very excited to hear the author.
 
Adrianne Ashford BrattonAs part of our Black History Month celebration, author Adrienne Ashford Bratton spoke to our students on Monday, February 25, 2024. She wrote the book Strrrike!, a biography about her father Emmett Ashford, the first black umpire in Major League Baseball.

Grandes Dreamers

To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, author, TV and radio personality, philanthropist, and activist Argelia Atilano visited our campus on September 28, 2023, to talk about her career and the book she authored, Grandes Dreamers, which highlights 12 hispanic trailblazers and their contributions to our society as inspiring and powerful hispanic women. Listen to this shout-out to Jack London from Mega 96.3 from El Show de Omar y Argelia.

Mr. Vasquez visited our campus and signed books for our students on May 11, 2023. He also shared his story and talked about the five principles to break bonds of trauma and how to achieve personal success. He is a motivational speaker and success coach who works with teens and adults. 

 Dr. Eric Cervini chatted with our students on March 6, 2023. He talked about his novel, The Deviant's War: The Homosexual vs. The United States of America, his struggles growing up,  LGBTQ+ history, rights, and activism.  

 Dr. Victor Ríos talked to the students on January 23, 2023, about his life journey from being part of a gang and being incarcerated as a juvenile to becoming a public speaker, professor of Sociology at UCSB, and his work promoting personal transformation and civic engagement.
 

 Authors of San Diego Lowriders, A History of Cars and Cruising Alberto López Pulido and Rigoberto "Rigo" Perez talked to the students on November 7, 2022. The authors talked about their book and their work with lowrider cars. 

 

 Author Gretchen McNeil spoke to our students on September 12, 2022, about her journey as a writer. She spoke about the process of getting published, the struggles she overcame trying to find an agent, and the creative process behind her work.
